How to Plan for your Spring or Summer Renovation

How to Plan for your Spring or Summer Renovation
Spring will be here soon, but the time to plan is now!

If you’re thinking about a renovation or upgrade to your home in 2021, Focus Construction recommends that you start planning now.

Why? For one, demand for materials and contractors will only increase, so you’ll want to secure both your resources and a contractor’s time before they are sold out or fully booked. Additionally, some items may take longer to order than in past years due to the pandemic, making it more important than ever to get what you need early to complete your renovation.

Step 1 – Budget

While there are many types of renovations, expansions, or upgrades that can be made to your home, it all comes down to money. Be realistic and stick to your budget no matter how tempting it may be to add more alterations.

Step 2 – Renovation

After deciding on your budget, you’ve probably narrowed down your options for what you want to renovate, if you don’t already have a clear choice.

Do you want to add an extension to the back of your home?

Dig out your basement?

Add another story to your home?

Renovate your kitchen or turn a bedroom into a home office?

Step 3 – Design

Decide what style or design that you prefer. Focus Construction recommends spending some time on Houzz or Pinterest to determine your design tastes and preferences. Once you have found a few designs that you like, save them so that you can provide them to your contractor. This will ensure that you are on the same page and can properly set expectations.

Step 4 – Designer/Architect

Now that your contractor knows your style, they can recommend the best designer or architect to fit your preferences and renovation type.

Securing these professionals ahead of time will allow you to fine-tune your designs until they are perfect and meet your renovation goals.

Step 5 – Sourcing

Once the designs have been finalized, the contractor can begin sourcing materials, arranging tradespeople, and providing you with an estimate.

It is important to note that during the COVID-19 pandemic, certain materials are harder to source. Increased demand has also raised the prices of items crucial to many renovations.

Moreover, certain companies and factories that manufacture materials such as windows and doors are running at slower capacities. Because these delays could extend your timeline by several weeks, it is highly recommended that you get started with the steps above in order to secure a smooth renovation.
